Obverse description Central field features a stylized floral rosette flanked by four large Chinese characters arranged in a cross formation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left. The upper legend contains additional Chinese characters denoting the reign title Guangxu, while the lower legend reads the denomination. Manchu script (Boo-nan, indicating the Hunan Mint) appears to the left and right of the central device. The entire design is framed by an outer beaded border, typical of the provincial machine-struck cash coinage of the late Qing dynasty.
