Hupeh was among the first Chinese provinces to establish a modern steam-powered mint, opened in 1893 under Zhang Zhidong's industrialization program. The uncircled dragon variant catalogued here reflects one of several die modifications made during the 1902–1905 run, as the provincial mint experimented with design elements without central Qing authorization — a pattern that would eventually prompt Beijing to attempt, largely unsuccessfully, to standardize provincial cash coinage in 1905.
