Additional information

Hupeh was among the earliest and most prolific provincial mints to adopt steam-powered coinage under the Qing modernization drive, and its output of copper cash coins in this period was enormous — which makes die variety attribution genuinely difficult. The circled square at centre distinguishes this subtype within the Y#120 series, a positional die detail that emerged from the mint's practice of recycling and modifying working dies rather than cutting fresh ones for each production run.
