| Obverse description | Four Chinese ideograms in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square perforation, read in the traditional sequence top-to-bottom, right-to-left: 大 (Da), 中 (Zhong), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bao). The bold, deeply cast characters are set within a plain inner rim bordering the square hole, with a raised outer rim encircling the broad, flat field. The overall style is characteristic of large-denomination cash coins issued under Zhu Yuanzhang's Great Zhong regime prior to the establishment of the Ming dynasty. |
