The Great Zhong State was the short-lived regime of Chen Youliang, a former fisherman's son who rose through the Red Turban rebellion to challenge Zhu Yuanzhang directly for control of China. The Dazhong Tongbao series was struck during this contest for supremacy — Chen held the Yangtze valley and commanded substantial forces, but was decisively defeated and killed at the Battle of Lake Poyang in 1363, one of the largest naval engagements in history. His son held out until 1364 before the regime collapsed entirely.
The "Fu" and "Shi" marks denote furnace and supervisory designations used to track production across multiple casting sites. Hartill 20.51 is among the scarcer denomination variants of this already compressed series.
