The field is entirely blank, consistent with the uniface design typical of Northern Song dynasty cast iron cash of large denomination. The Daguan Tongbao series was issued under Emperor Huizong, whose reign is better remembered for artistic refinement than fiscal discipline. The iron castings of this denomination were a direct response to chronic copper shortages driven by the Northern Song's enormous military expenditures along the Jin frontier — iron served as a monetary substitute in regions where copper coinage was being hoarded or melted. Huizong himself is credited with designing the reign title's calligraphy in his distinctive slender gold style.
Iron cash corroded aggressively in circulation, and survivors in any coherent condition are genuinely uncommon.
