Additional information

Đồng Khánh was installed on the throne in 1885 by the French following their forced exile of his predecessor Hàm Nghi, making him — in the eyes of many Vietnamese — a collaborationist emperor ruling at French sufferance. His reign lasted barely three years before his death in 1889. The cash coins issued under his name were produced in the traditional square-holed format that Vietnamese mints had maintained for centuries, but the political circumstances of his reign meant output was limited and the series never achieved the volume of longer-lived reigns.
