Obverse description Central field features four large Chinese ideograms arranged in a cruciform pattern reading top to bottom and right to left, with a decorative floral motif at the centre. The ideograms are surrounded by a circular band of additional Chinese characters denoting the issuing province, denomination, and coin type. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner border and an outer milled rim.

Reverse description Central device comprises a large nine-pointed star with radiating lines extending from a raised or recessed central roundel, each point terminating in a small sphere; the star type and centre vary by variety. Two small rosettes flank the star at the left and right within the inner beaded border. The surrounding legend reads 'HU-NAN' at the top and 'TEN CASH' at the bottom, separated by the rosettes, all within a beaded circle and an outer milled rim.
