The Chongzhen reign was financially catastrophic from the outset — the Ming treasury was effectively bankrupt by the 1630s, funding simultaneous campaigns against Manchu incursions in the north and Li Zicheng's rebel armies internally. Emergency large-denomination cash coins like this 10-cash piece were a direct consequence: the court needed to pay troops and suppliers without the silver reserves to do it. Debasement followed quickly, and the Ministry of Revenue issues were soon competing with a flood of private and provincial counterfeits of wildly inconsistent weight and alloy.
Hartill 20.247 places this among the Ministry of Revenue's heavier sanctioned strikes — the 11.5g weight suggests an earlier production run before standards collapsed entirely.
