The Chongning reign (1101–1106) under Emperor Huizong was notable for an aggressive expansion of the cash coin system, including the introduction of large-denomination pieces intended to ease chronic copper shortages by reducing the total number of coins needed in daily transactions. Huizong was himself a calligrapher of the first rank, and the inscription on issues from this period is rendered in his personal slender gold script — a style so distinctive it is effectively a autograph in bronze.
Production was short-lived. Political opposition to the large-denomination policy, combined with widespread counterfeiting, forced significant policy reversals before the reign ended.
