Anhwei Province was among the earliest interior provinces to establish a modern steam-powered mint, opened at Anqing in 1897 under viceroy-level pressure from the Qing court to reduce dependence on coastal minting facilities. The province's output was notoriously inconsistent in the early years — die preparation was irregular and planchet quality varied batch to batch — making Y#34 pieces a reliable indicator of those teething problems in practice.
The Anqing mint closed in 1906 when the Board of Revenue consolidated provincial copper cash production under fewer, larger facilities.
