The Banco del Comercio was one of several Bolivian private banks of issue operating under the 1890 banking law, which formally opened the note-issuing privilege to commercial institutions beyond the older state-backed houses. That experiment ended badly — chronic over-issuance, a collapsing silver standard, and the trauma of the 1899 Federal War between Sucre and La Paz combined to discredit private emission entirely. By 1911 the Banco de la Nación Boliviana had absorbed most of the sector.

Bradbury Wilkinson handled the printing, as they did for a large share of South American commercial bank paper at the turn of the century.
