Reverse description A left-facing bust of Simón Bolívar, rendered in stamp-fashion intaglio relief, occupies the right portion of the field. To the left, the centennial dates '1873' and '1973' are inscribed, commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the coin type. The name 'SIMON BOLÍVAR' appears along the lower portion of the field, while the engraver's signature 'BARRE' is incised at the base of the bust, attributing the portrait die to Désiré-Albert Barre.

Additional information

Venezuela's large silver bolívar coinage was effectively killed off by the oil boom. As petrodollars flooded the economy through the early 1970s, rising silver prices made the metal value of these coins approach and then threaten to exceed face value, pushing the Banco Central toward base-metal alternatives. The 1973 issue sits near the end of that transition — within a few years, circulating silver of this size had disappeared from Venezuelan commerce entirely.
