Estado Guayana was one of several Venezuelan federal states briefly authorized to issue their own paper currency during the late 1870s, a period when the central government's monetary authority was loosely enforced and regional commercial networks operated largely on local credit. The Venezolano was the national unit at the time of printing; the dual denomination marking reflects the transition already underway toward the Bolívar, which replaced it in 1879 under the national monetary reform.

State-level Venezuelan issues from this period survive in tiny numbers. Most circulated hard in remote riverine commerce and were never redeemed through any formal withdrawal.
