The 1812 date places this coin squarely in the Mediation period, when Napoleon's Act of Mediation had dissolved the short-lived Helvetic Republic and restored cantonal authority — giving cantons like Zürich the right to issue their own coinage once again after years of centralized suppression. The Batzen denominations were a direct reassertion of that recovered autonomy.
The HMZ reference 2-1174a distinguishes this as the primary variety within the type. Zürich's cantonal coinage of this period was struck at relatively low volumes, and the 1812 issue is among the scarcer dates in the Batzen series.
