Pattern strikes for Romanian coinage in the early 1900s were produced primarily at the Brussels mint and occasionally by private diesinkers auditioning for future contracts. The 1905 date places this piece within Carol I's push to modernize and stabilize Romanian coinage following the country's recognition as a kingdom in 1881 — a process that involved multiple exploratory strikings that never reached circulation approval.
