Siam's fourth banknote series was in production when the country renamed itself Thailand in June 1939, creating an immediate problem: notes already printed or mid-run still bore "Siam" on their face. The government continued issuing them regardless, which means this note circulated under a country name that had ceased to exist. The Type II revision corrected the designation to "Thailand," making this Thomas Type I a transitional survivor of that administrative scramble rather than a simple predecessor.
De La Rue's single-watermark security was modest even by late-1930s standards — the Japanese occupation years that followed would expose how easily wartime pressures overwhelmed such protections.
