The aluminium bronze centre displays the official seal of Mahidol University's Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, comprising a crowned royal emblem above a stylised Pali motto in Thai script, encircled by the faculty's full name. Below the central device, within the ring, appear the inscriptions attributing the issue to the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital and recording the commemorative date of 26 April BE 2551. |

This issue commemorates the 140th anniversary of Siriraj Hospital, Thailand's oldest and largest hospital, founded in 1888 by Rama V following the death of his son Prince Siriraj Kakuttapat, who died there of dysentery at age one. The hospital's name honors that child. Siriraj remains the primary teaching hospital of Mahidol University and houses the preserved body of Rama IX's own predecessor, Rama VIII, whose disputed 1946 death by gunshot was never officially resolved.
