Issued to mark the 90th anniversary of the Government Savings Bank, founded by royal decree of Rama VI in 1913 as a state-backed alternative to informal moneylenders that were extracting ruinous rates from working-class Thais. The institution was explicitly modeled on postal savings systems already operating in Britain and Japan, and its founding was part of a broader modernization of Siamese financial infrastructure under the Chakkri reform period.
