Thailand's Fine Arts Department was established in 1911 under Rama VI, tasked with preserving the kingdom's cultural heritage at a moment when Western colonial pressure had made the demonstration of civilizational sophistication a matter of diplomatic urgency. The centenary fell under Rama IX's reign, prompting this commemorative issue from the Royal Thai Mint in 2011.
