Portugal retained Macau as a colony well into the twentieth century, and the 1952 bronze coinage was issued under the Estado Novo regime — Salazar's corporatist government, which administered overseas territories through the Agência Geral do Ultramar. This particular denomination filled a gap in small-change circulation that had persisted since earlier issues proved inadequate for the colony's busy port economy. Macau's proximity to and economic entanglement with mainland China, then only three years into Communist rule, gave even minor colonial coinage an unusual geopolitical edge during this period.
