Argentina's June 1985 Austral Plan was one of the more dramatic stabilization attempts in the country's monetary history — prices had risen roughly 1,000% in 1984 alone. The new currency was introduced at a rate of 1 Austral to 1,000 Pesos Argentinos, which meant existing note stocks needed to be dealt with immediately. Rather than wait for entirely new printings, the Banco Central authorized Casa de Moneda to overprint large quantities of circulating and reserve Pesos Argentinos notes, this being among them.
The overprint solution was practical but short-lived. Inflation resumed, and by 1989 the Austral itself was collapsing.
