Tucumán's provincial austral issues were a direct consequence of the acute coin shortage that struck Argentina in the mid-1980s, when chronic inflation made low-denomination metallic currency economically irrational to produce or hold. Provincial governments stepped in with their own fractional paper — technically emergency money, though officially sanctioned. Tucumán was among the most prolific issuers in the northwest.
These notes circulated almost exclusively within the province, accepted by local commerce and public transport but refused elsewhere. Redemption was erratic, and a portion never returned to the issuing authority.
