Iceland's small bronze aurar denominations were rendered nearly worthless by the severe inflation that plagued the country through the late 1970s and early 1980s — the króna lost the majority of its purchasing power during this period, and coins like this one were effectively obsolete almost from the moment of striking. Iceland redenominated in 1981, replacing the old króna at 100:1, which made the entire aurar series redundant within the same year this piece was issued.
