The design is framed by a three-quarter wreath of olive and coffee branches tied at the base with a small ring, with stylised wing-like ornaments flanking the date '1983' in the lower exergue. The circular legend 'REPOBLIKA DEMOKRATIKA MALAGASY' runs along the upper periphery in Latin characters. |

| Reversbeschreibung | Within a beaded inner circle, a standing male figure wearing a broad-brimmed hat is depicted in left profile, engaged in cutting or working the land with a long-handled tool, with stylised rocky terrain in the background. Below the central scene, a scroll cartouche bears the three-line Malagasy motto. The legend 'ARIARY FOLO' arcs along the upper periphery outside the beaded circle, with a dotted border framing the entire design. |

| Zusätzliche Informationen |
Madagascar's ariary coinage of this period was produced under the Didier Ratsiraka government, which had nationalized the economy and reoriented the country toward socialist policy following the 1975 coup. Coin production was contracted to foreign mints — the Monnaie de Paris struck much of the island's coinage during these decades — as Madagascar lacked domestic minting infrastructure.
The "motto A" designation distinguishes this from earlier variants by the specific rendering of the national motto on the die, a cataloger's distinction rather than an intentional mint variation.
