Zurab Achba was a celebrated Abkhazian folk singer and composer whose work became closely tied to Abkhazian cultural identity during the Soviet period and after. The National Bank of Abkhazia has issued commemorative silver pieces sporadically since the early 2000s, largely as collector vehicles — Abkhazia's internationally unrecognized status means these coins hold no practical monetary function outside the territory, and even within it, the Russian ruble circulates as the de facto currency.
