Vladislav Ardzinba led Abkhazia through its 1992–93 war with Georgia and became the first president of the unrecognized republic, serving until 2005. The Bank of Abkhazia, itself unrecognized by any UN member state, issues commemorative coinage that circulates almost exclusively among collectors rather than in trade — a monetary system functioning more as soft diplomacy and revenue generation than currency.
The apsar denomination itself was introduced in 2008, named after a medieval gold coin of the region.
