The Dormition Cathedral at Lykhny is among the oldest surviving Christian structures in the Caucasus, dating to the tenth century and located in what was the medieval capital of the Abkhazian principality. Abkhazia's declaration of independence from Georgia in 1999 — recognized by almost no one internationally — gave the National Bank a peculiar mandate: issue coinage for a state whose currency has no meaningful circulation and whose sovereignty is disputed by nearly every government on earth. These silver issues exist almost entirely as numismatic objects, never intended for a cash economy.
