Lykhny village in the Gudauta district served for centuries as the medieval capital of Abkhazian princes, and the Dormition Cathedral there dates to roughly the 10th century — one of the oldest surviving Christian structures in the Caucasus. The National Bank of Abkhazia began issuing the apsar series in 2008, roughly a month before Russia formally recognized Abkhazian independence following the August war with Georgia. The coins are legal tender in name, though the breakaway republic's actual daily currency remains the Russian ruble.
