The Bank of Abkhazia issues collector pieces denominated in Apsars, a currency with no meaningful circulation, effectively functioning as a sovereign assertion in metal rather than a monetary instrument.
The Dranda Cathedral, dating to the 6th century Byzantine period, survived the devastating 1992–1993 Georgian-Abkhaz war and was returned to Orthodox monastic use in the 1990s after decades of Soviet repurposing as a psychiatric hospital.
