To the left of the cathedral appear two subsidiary motifs: a sacrificial bull and an arrowhead-shaped votive offering known in Abkhazian as 'афырхы'. Abkhazia's National Bank has issued commemorative coinage since 2003 despite the territory's unrecognized status — these pieces are legal tender within Abkhazia but accepted by no international monetary body. The Apsar series was conceived partly as a revenue instrument targeting foreign collectors, since the coins circulate almost nowhere.
The Cathedral of St. George at Elyr (Ilori) dates to the 11th century and remains an active Georgian Orthodox site claimed by both Abkhaz and Georgian ecclesiastical authorities — a tension that predates the 1992–93 war and has not been resolved since.
