Sergey Bagapsh served as President of Abkhazia from 2005 until his death in May 2011, following surgery for a lung tumor in Moscow. His initial election in 2004 was so contested — with rival candidate Raul Khajimba backed openly by Moscow — that Russia briefly cut off gas and electricity to the territory before a compromise re-run election was arranged. Bagapsh won that re-run handily and later brought Khajimba in as his vice president, a pragmatic reconciliation that stabilized the separatist government through its most diplomatically consequential years.
Russia's formal recognition of Abkhazian independence came in August 2008, during Bagapsh's tenure.
