Tkuarchal — spelled Tkvarcheli in Georgian — was the site of one of the most prolonged sieges of the Georgian-Abkhaz war. From 1992 to 1993, the town's largely Armenian and Russian civilian population was blockaded by Georgian National Guard forces for nearly fourteen months. A humanitarian airlift organized through Russian military channels was the primary lifeline; without it, casualties from starvation and cold would have been catastrophic. The town's coal mines, which had powered much of the Soviet-era Transcaucasian economy, sat idle throughout.
Abkhazia's "Hero-town" coin series draws direct parallel to the Soviet-era Hero City designations — a deliberate framing of Abkhaz national memory around the 1992–93 war.
