Abkhazia's de facto independence — unrecognized by most UN member states but backed by Russia since the 2008 war with Georgia — creates an odd numismatic category: collector coins issued by a central bank whose currency has no independent exchange rate and circulates alongside the Russian ruble. The 2016 CONIFA World Football Cup was hosted in Sukhumi, making it one of the few international sporting events ever staged in the territory, and the Bank of Abkhazia marked it with this issue.
CONIFA — the Confederation of Independent Football Associations — organizes tournaments for states, minorities, and unrecognized territories excluded from FIFA. Abkhazia won the 2016 tournament on home ground.
