Abkhazia's apsar series occupies an odd corner of numismatics — issued by a central bank of a state recognized by fewer than a handful of UN members, these pieces circulate nowhere and exist almost entirely for the collector market. The apsar itself was introduced in 2008, the same year Russia recognized Abkhazian independence following the brief August war with Georgia, giving the currency its only real political moment.
