Abkhazia's coinage program exists in a peculiar legal and political limbo — the territory declared independence from Georgia in 1999, but is recognized by only a handful of UN member states, Russia chief among them. The National Bank issues coins primarily for the collector market, as the Russian ruble functions as the de facto circulating currency. This piece marks the 85th anniversary of Abkhazian State University, founded in 1932 in Sukhumi during the Soviet period, when the territory held the status of an Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic within the Georgian SSR.
