Additional information

Rwanda's National Bank introduced brass-plated steel coinage in the early 2000s as part of a deliberate cost-reduction program following the catastrophic economic collapse that accompanied the 1994 genocide. The shift away from solid brass was purely fiscal — the country was rebuilding its monetary infrastructure from near nothing, and cheaper planchets were a practical necessity rather than a design choice.

The "Type 1 legend" designation distinguishes this issue from a subsequent variety with a modified inscription layout, a revision made within just a few years of this coin's introduction.
