Rwanda's "Gorilla" bullion series, launched in 2013, quietly became one of the more respected modern African bullion programs — partly because the mountain gorilla subject genuinely connects to Rwanda's conservation history, and partly because the coins are struck to .9999 fineness at Bavarian mint facilities with consistent quality. The 0.10g fractional denomination was introduced to make gold accessible at near-spot prices, a deliberate strategy targeting first-time bullion buyers rather than collectors.
Annual design changes keep the series alive in secondary markets. The 2021 issue is one of the smallest gold coins in regular commercial production anywhere in the world by weight.
