Rwanda has issued a long-running series of small platinum and gold fractional pieces under the "Atoms" program, targeting the bullion collector market rather than any domestic monetary function. At 0.5 grams of .999 platinum, the coin exists almost entirely as a vehicle for platinum ownership in the smallest practical denomination — Rwanda's nominal face value providing the legal tender framework required for international bullion trade.
