Pitane was one of the twelve cities of ancient Aeolis, situated on the Aegean coast of what is now western Turkey. The city held enough regional importance that Strabo mentions it specifically, yet its bronze coinage is rarely encountered — production appears to have been modest and largely civic in function, serving local exchange rather than regional trade networks. SNG Copenhagen 537 represents one of the better-documented die matches for this type.
