The Gold-Girobank Schleswig-Holstein A.-G. issued these aluminum Gutschriftsmarken in 1923 as privately-backed credit tokens, a direct response to the catastrophic collapse of the Reichsmark during the hyperinflation crisis. "Gutschriftsmarke" translates roughly as credit voucher — these were not legal tender but circulated locally as small-change substitutes when coin production from state mints could not keep pace with denominations that changed value by the hour. The issuing institution was one of several regional giro banks operating under cooperative principles in northern Germany, serving agricultural and commercial clients across Schleswig-Holstein.
Aluminum was chosen precisely because its intrinsic value was negligible — a deliberate hedge against metal hoarding.
