Issued to commemorate John Paul II's third visit to Poland in June 1987, this piece was struck under the communist government of the Polish People's Republic — an ideologically awkward circumstance given that the Catholic Church had been a principal institutional force behind Solidarity and the broader opposition movement throughout the preceding decade. The regime's willingness to produce an official gold issue honoring the Pope reflected how thoroughly the political ground had shifted by the late 1980s.
