Issued under the People's Republic of Poland — an atheist state — this coin commemorating John Paul II required a degree of political calculation that bordered on the absurd. The communist government had been quietly acknowledging the Pope's domestic influence since his first pilgrimage to Poland in 1979, when crowds of up to three million gathered in Warsaw alone, dwarfing any party-organized event. By 1986, with Solidarity suppressed but not broken, the regime found it more expedient to issue the coin than to ignore him.
The .750 fineness is notably below the .900 silver used in earlier Polish collector issues, a quiet indicator of the hard currency pressures the state faced through the mid-1980s.
