China's large-format gold bullion issues of this period were produced at the Shenzhen Guobao Mint, which had by 2005 established itself as the primary facility for high-weight commemorative strikes of this kind. The Rooster series that year marked the beginning of a new 12-year zodiac cycle in the People's Bank's commemorative program, and the kilogram denomination carried an official face value of 10,000 yuan at a time when that figure represented roughly $1,200 USD — a legal fiction, given the gold content alone was worth multiples of that.
Mintage for the kilogram piece was capped at 118, a number chosen for its auspicious phonetic associations in Mandarin.
