China's kilogram gold lunar coins occupy a peculiar position in the modern bullion market: they are legal tender at face value but priced orders of magnitude above it, a fiction the People's Bank has maintained since launching the lunar series in 1981. The 10,000 yuan denomination has never meaningfully circulated and was never intended to. Mintage for kilogram issues in this series is tightly controlled, typically in the low hundreds, making secondary-market availability almost entirely dependent on original purchasers releasing inventory.
2015 marks the second Goat year in the series since it relaunched under the modernized .999 fineness standard, distinguishing this coin from its .999 predecessors struck for 1991.
