The kilogram Panda gold coin occupies a peculiar position in Chinese bullion policy: it exists primarily as a prestige instrument for institutional buyers and sovereign gift exchanges rather than anything approaching genuine circulation. The People's Bank has issued kilogram Pandas since the early 1980s expansion of the series, but annual mintages at this size have historically been capped in the low hundreds — precise figures for recent years are not publicly disclosed by the mint.
Each annual issue carries a revised panda design, a policy change implemented in 1983 and maintained ever since, which distinguishes the Chinese series from virtually every other national bullion program.
