Mount Putuo, a small island off the Zhoushan archipelago in Zhejiang province, is considered one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains in China and the earthly home of Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion. The site draws millions of pilgrims annually and has been a locus of imperial patronage since the Song dynasty.
