Issued to commemorate the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, delayed by one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic — the first postponement of the Summer Games in peacetime history. Japan had already struck commemorative Olympic gold across multiple series by the time this piece was produced, but the Reiwa-era issues mark the first Olympic coinage struck under Emperor Naruhito, who ascended following Akihito's abdication in April 2019.
The JNDA reference places this within the broader 2019–2021 Tokyo Olympic commemorative program, which spanned dozens of individual issues across gold, silver, and clad formats, released in waves over several years.
