Beschrijving voorzijde A highly detailed ho-o (Japanese phoenix) rendered in high relief occupies the central field, depicted in a dynamic rearing posture with wings fully spread and elaborate tail plumage streaming outward in sweeping curvilinear forms. Stylized auspicious clouds (zuiun) fill the lower field and background, rendered in the classical Japanese court artistic tradition. An inner beaded border encircles the design, itself enclosed by the reeded outer rim.

Beschrijving keerzijde The sixteen-petalled Imperial chrysanthemum mon is centrally positioned in high relief, encircled by a decorative wreath of flowering branches with blossoms and foliage rendered in fine detail. Kanji legends arranged radially around the periphery read, clockwise from the top: 御即位記念 (Commemoration of the Imperial Enthronement), with 令和元年 (First Year of Reiwa) on the right and 日本国 (State of Japan) on the left. The denomination 1万円 (10,000 Yen) appears in the lower field, flanked by raised dots. An inner beaded border frames the entire composition.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued to commemorate the accession of Emperor Naruhito on May 1, 2019 — the first abdication-triggered succession in Japan in over two centuries, as his father Akihito stepped down citing age and health rather than dying in office. The previous abdication of a reigning emperor had occurred in 1817 under Emperor Kōkaku, before modern constitutional structures existed to regulate the process.

Special legislation had to be passed in 2017 specifically to permit Akihito's abdication, as the existing Imperial Household Law contained no provision for it.
