Reverse description The centre of the reverse carries a symmetrical vignette of two hōō (phoenix) birds rendered in multicolour — yellow, green, and blue — drawn from the pillar paintings of the Byōdō-in Temple's Hōō-dō hall, flanking a pale central panel with a faint architectural underprint. The design is enclosed within a finely engraved dark brown border with foliate scrollwork and lobed cartouches bearing the numeral 10000 at left and right. The legend NIPPON GINKO runs across the top panel and 10000 YEN across the bottom panel, both in intaglio lettering.
